Fine Art Auction Houses

Here is a comprehensive list of websites that aim to give you an insight into the world of art auctioneering.  The websites each have their own section with pieces currently up for auction along with a brief description and estimated price.  Auctions can be some of the most exciting and profitable places to buy and sell collectible art, but it is important to remember that the aim of an art auction is for the auctioneer to make money.  An auction house will always take a commission from the selling price of an item, and may charge handling fees for items that are not sold. Also if the auction is held in Europe and/or London 'Droit de Suite' (Artist Resale Rights tax) will be added to the total sale price and charged to the buyer. It is important to understand that this tax will be charged on the secondary market sale of art of any living artist and it is not charged on the profit from the sale but on EVERY sale price. So if you bought at $5000.00 and sell at £1000.00 you would still be liable to pay this tax.
